Dear Families,

Today is our second last PA Day for the 2015-2016 school year!  It is a stunner out there, so I do hope your child is lathered up in sunscreen and gets time to play outside with family and friends.  I'm spending my day inside reflecting upon and writing about your child's academic, social, and behavioural growth this year.  I love this part of my job as I get to share all the wonderful things your child has accomplished in Grade 2 and will carry forward with them as he/she prepares for entry into Grade 3.  It truly makes me smile thinking about how far we've all come to be the best version of ourselves in and out of the classroom!

Probability:
On Tuesday, I sent home a math note explaining our new unit of math - probability!  Students are getting really into it as they're thinking about events in their own lives and making predictions about what is likely, unlikely, and certain to happen.  I've overheard some enthusiastic responses:

"It is CERTAIN that I am going to Canada's Wonderful on Saturday with my Dad and sister!"

"It is likely I will celebrate my birthday at the pool place."

"It is unlikely I will have to do homework on the weekend because I finished it during the week!"

Check out students below as they shared their responses with a peer.
NOTE:  Next week, we will be getting into doing experiments and playing probability games using coins and dice!  Stay tuned for a post about this next Friday!

Social Studies:
On Wednesday during Social Studies, Danica wanted to share her Chickadee magazine with the class. She linked our learning of continents / countries around the world and showed us what life is like in South Korea from the perspective of a young boy her age.  She read some of the captions and students were definitely intrigued as they realized that life there is different but also has similarities. Students are becoming more and more comfortable when talking about the parts of the world around us and are asking questions to gain further knowledge.  Thanks Danica for opening our eyes, ears, and heart to another intriguing Asian country!

PINK Shirt Days Continue:
As you know, learning in school is not strictly about reading, writing, and math.  Here at E.C.E.S. and other schools across Simcoe County, there is a daily emphasis on ensuring students learn to be and feel safe, strong, and free.  To put this learning into action, we continue having PINK SHIRT WEDNESDAYS!  I am overjoyed by the students in my class who participate in this weekly not just in their attire, but more importantly, in their thoughts, words, and ACTIONS!  Thank you girls for standing up for Anti-Bullying not just in our school, but also in your daily life!  You're making a difference!

W.A.L.T.
As you're aware of our daily end of the day routine, students participate in W.A.L.T. "We All Learned Today..." as a way to specifically share one new learning from the school day which they will hopefully then share with you too at home :)  Yesterday, Reanna and Thomas M. came to school excited as they brought in a snack for this experience.  I want to say thank you to both students and their families for your thoughtfulness and generosity.  I know your peers appreciated this too!

Sneak Peak Father's Day Gift:
Of course, Father's Day isn't until next Sunday, but I'm just so excited to share what your child's working on as a gift.  We still have work to do on it, but here's a sneak peak at what we've started so far for the card ...check it out!  CUTE, no?!  Thank you for providing a photograph for it, it probably makes more sense to you now why I asked for a large portrait head :)  I will ensure I take a picture of your child with their completed card for next week's post!

Quote:
"You matter.  You're important.  You're loved.  Your presence on this Earth makes a difference whether you see it or not."

Namaste,
Miss Gill
