I hope you've had a wonderful work week! Can you believe snow in April!? I'm so happy I kept my snow tires on just in case. Although, leading into the weekend, we're in for lots of SUNSHINE and warmer temperatures! Enjoy soaking it in :)
Solving Addition & Subtraction Word Problems:
Our focus in math has been on addition and subtraction of double digit numbers with and without regrouping. Students are becoming more comfortable with this concept when given a math question like this: 34+57 = OR 78-29= Many use a hundreds chart to quickly find the sum(+) or difference(-), and then show their work with the regrouping steps.
We have now moved into solving addition and subtraction word problems. Often times, this can be challenging as words mixed in with numbers can be confusing. To assist with this, this week, I introduced a problem solving strategy which has been effective for most students. Ask them about this. I am encouraging my students to approach a word problem using the following:
Success Criteria:
UNDERSTAND: I can understand the problem.
- Read the question slowly to yourself twice.
- What is the question asking you?
- Underline, circle, or highlight important parts of the question.
PLAN: I can make a plan to solve the problem.
- What operation (addition or subtraction) will you use to help you solve the problem?
- What tools or strategies will you use to help you solve? e.g., base-ten blocks, 100's chart, mental math
SOLVE: I can use pictures, numbers, and words to solve.
- Use pictures, numbers, and words to solve the problem and justify your answer.
CHECK: I can check over my work before handing it in.
- Proof-read your work.
- Ask yourself: Does it LOOK right? Does it SOUND right? Does it MAKE SENSE?
- Make any necessary edits.
- Ask a peer to give you feedback.
Thank you boys and girls for working so diligently hard on your science reports! You did an excellent job in completing your first project. I am very proud of your efforts! I hope this learning experience will help inspire you in your future grades to effectively gather information, organize it, and present your findings to an audience to teach them about your specific topic. This weekend, take the time to please listen to your child present his/her project to you. They are excited about this!!
International Pink Day:
On Wednesday, it was International Pink Day at all schools to promote Anti-Bullying. As many of you know, I encourage my students to wear PINK each Wed. to reinforce the importance of no bullying. Unfortunately, bullying is an issue that has affected many in some form or another. In our class, it is a regular practice of ours to follow The Tribes Agreements: attentive listening, mutual respect, NO PUT DOWNS, right to participate, right to pass. There is an emphasis on 'No Put Downs' each day as I want to ensure each student in my class feels safe, valued, and loved. When there is an issue or concern, I meet with the students involved and we have a conference to resolve it. I am delighted to report that our class is filled with students who demonstrate caring, compassion, and cooperation. Together, we CAN and WILL make a difference to put a STOP TO BULLYING.
| Thank you Madison, Ethan W., Danica, Reanna, Amy, and Kaylie to stand up for Anti-Bullying! |
Thank you to the families who donated more kleenex for our runny noses! As you know, we've had winter like conditions, so kleenex continues to be needed. Hopefully, this'll be the last batch we'll require.
Spring Fling Gift Basket:
Our theme as mentioned in last week's post is Healthy & Active Living. Some of the donations we've received thus far from families are a skipping rope, utility balls (e.g., mini football, basketball, soccer ball), a tee-ball set, and tooth brush/tooth paste. Thank you Ethan F., Cameron, and Danica's parents for these!! I think once we have all of our items, our basket will be sought after and help raise money for playground equipment!! As a staff, we feel it is a much needed accessory for our children during fitness breaks. Two more weeks to donate!
Please Note: ALL donations have to be at school prior to April 25th.
Art with Mrs. Hollmaan & Mr. Parker:
Thank you to Evelyn's Mom for volunteering her time and coming to our class on Thurs. to do an engaging art lesson. The students were buzzing with excitement as they displayed their creative and artistic spirits! During W.A.L.T. many shared about this experience and were so proud of their creations!
